A period ( . ) is placed after a sentence or initials and abbreviations. A period is used to end a sentence that makes a statement, gives a command or makes a request. Periods also may be used as decimal points or as a separators.

A period is not required for a statement the is surrouned by parentheses or is part of a larger sentence. When an abbreviation is the last word in asentence, only one period should be used.
