The Six Traits of Writing
| |
| The six traits of writing is a model allowing you to assess your writing and become a better writer. The six traits of writing are: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. If you master these traits, you can write any kind of essay that will impress. These traits are common in all kinds of essays - from an article in a magazine to our school papers. Let's examine each of these six traits further: |
| |
Description of the Six Traits:
| Ideas/Content |
The content of your paper. The core of your message. Good ideas/content allow you to keep your reader reading. |
| Organization |
Allows your reader to understand your paper in a clear and easy way. Also, good organization allows you to make your ideas/content strong in the reader's mind. |
| Voice |
Voice gives your paper spunk and personality. Voice allows you to sell yourself as an author, and allows you to express your enthusiasm for the topic. Many writers lack this important trait! |
| Word Choice |
Word choice means your readers will be able to imagine what you're describing in their head. Also, good word choice means using vocabulary appropriate for your audience. |
| Sentence Fluency |
This means that you should use the best kind of sentence, not necessarily the longest one, or the one with the most challenging words in it. Oftentimes, you should use a mix of longer and shorter sentences. Make sure to have a rhythm in your sentences, because it makes your writing sound more fluent. |
| Conventions |
Conventions are one of the most basic traits out of all the traits. Having good conventions is still important, though. You don't want your readers to see glaring spelling or grammar mistakes. You want to look professional, and look like you have your basic writing down. |
