Styles of Poetry

There are many styles of poetry. However, we will just mention the most common kinds of poetry, since there are too many to list here. Poetry is a good way to express your thoughts in a condensed, and often forceful or moving fashion.

Common Styles of Poetry:

Free Verse Yes, free verse is a style of poetry. As the title states, free verse doesn't have a rhyme or certain pattern. The words don't have to rhyme. Free verse is a good way put your thoughts down without conforming to any particular rules.
Ode An ode is usually filled with strong emotion and meaning. An ode usually reveres or glorifies a person, place, or a thing.
Ballad A ballad goes at a slower tempo than other kinds of poetry, often because it's telling a story or a short narrative. They are written with power and force. Many lyrics to the songs today are ballads.
Sonnet Sonnets have a particular rhyming scheme, and contain 14 lines. The Shakespearian sonnet is the most common. Its rhyming scheme is: abab cdcd efef gg. There are other types of sonnets, including the Italian sonnet. Its rhyming scheme is: abba abba cdd cee.
Cinquian Cinquian poetry has five lines. There are 2 syllables for the first and last lines, 4 syllables for the second line, 6 syllables for the third line, and 8 for the fourth line. The first line usually has a noun - forms a title, essentially. The second line has two adjectives describing line 1. The third line has three action verbs relating to line 1. The fourth line usually describes feelings about line 1. The last line summarizes the line 1 in one word.
Acrostic Acrostic poetry is one of the easiest types of poetry. Basically, pick any word - such as SCHOOL. Then write a poem with S, C, H, O, O, and L beginning each line. The poem often expresses something about the word. Sometimes words such as, DR KING are used.
