Writing Body Paragraphs
| |
Body paragraphs are the main part of a paper. They take the main idea, elaborate, and explain the support in detail. If the body paragraphs are not well developed, then your paper won't be interesting to read, and it won't achieve what you want your paper to achieve.
To find what you should write your body paragraphs on, find out what are your 3-4 pieces of support for your main topic. Sometimes you can have more than 3-4 body paragraphs, but almost never fewer than this. Then elaborate about each piece of support. Elaboration will fill in the small details, which makes for a better paper. You do not necessarily need a summary sentence for each paragraph because it may sound too repetitive; however, you can include one if you wish.
One common essay format is the 5 paragraph paper. You will have 1 introduction paragraph, 1 conclusion paragraph, and 3 body paragraphs. This is very useful for school papers. |
What a Body Paragraph Consists of:
| A main idea |
The main idea is a piece of support relating back to the topic you want to discuss for the whole essay. Mention the main idea in the beginning of the paragraph. For example, if you were talking about why the Ipod is so popular, a body paragraph could be about the design of the Ipod. |
| Elaboration |
Fill in the reader with the specifics of the main idea. Elaboration helps you develop your paragraphs so that they have enough to be standing alone Make sure that what you elaborate on doesn't stray from the main idea of the paragraph! |
| Good examples, facts, or evidence |
Having a good combination of the three above helps you elaborate your paragraph. In addition, it adds credibility to what you are writing about. |
| A concluding sentence |
A concluding sentence may or may not help each of your body paragraphs. Use one if you need to summarize what has been said in the paragraph, or don't use one if your topic leads to the end of your paragraph. |
