Oceans and Seas

Beware of rip currents. Rip currents occur near the coast. A build-up of water is created near the shore and moves along the shore until it meets an area of lower waves. This mass of waves might break though the lower waves and move away from the shore at an alarming rate. People have drowned during rip currents. The only way to escape a rip current is to swim parallel to the shore. Rip currents' improper name are rip tides.

Whenever you see red tide the color of the body of water (ocean, sea, etc.) should be a brownish or reddish color. The color comes from rapid reproduction of toxic organisms. Most of these red tides are harmless, but some kill off fish during one of their "blooms", as the build-ups are called. They can also posion shellfish, birds, and even humans. They reason why they occur is not fully understood.
