Chlorophyll Chlorophyll's a green pigment found in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. It absorbs sunlight in red and blue pretty well, but poorly in the green sections of hte electromagnetic spectrum.
Chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis. The molecules in chlorophyll are arranged around photosystems in the thylakoid membranes. Chlorophyll serves two purposes. The first function of most chlorophyll is to absorb light and transfer it to a certain pair of chlorophyll. The function of the pair will be to use the energy absorbed and transferred by the other chlorophyll pigment.
To prove chlorophyll is needed for photosynthesis, you can do an experiment of cutting holes in foil and putting it over the leaf.
