Insects Insects are in the Animalia Kingdom, Arthropoda Phylum, Hexapoda Subphylum, and in the Insecta Class.
Insects have exoskeletons and their bodies aredivided into three sections-the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The head has antennaes, a pair of eyes and three sets of appendages that make the mouthpart. The thorax has six legs and a pair of wings (if it's present in the species). The abdomen has the digestive, respiratory, reproductive, and excretory systems.
Most insects hatch from eggs. All insects after birth go through moults as they grow in size. Moulting occurs when the insect sheds their exoskeleton in order to grow a larger outer covering. After hatching, insects change into larva, to a pupa, to an adult (or imago).
Insects are the only invertebrates to have flight capabilities. Many adult insects use their six legs for walking, several on water, but most use them on land. Large numbers of insects live underwater when they're not adults, although several species spend part or all of their adult lives underwater.
