Why: Face-to-Face conversational interaction and telephone interaction is very different than the textbook treatment of English. It is one area that English as a Second Language (ESL) learners are often very sensitive about. ESL learners frequently state that it is difficult to talk to a native speaker on the telephone. Many times ESL learners avoid or limit telephone conversations with native English speakers. To make matters even worse it can be difficult or impossible to set-up a learning discussion between native and non-native speaker. Many students wonder what it would be like. Well now, Spell.Com addresses the key area of refining authentic American Dialect speaking skills. Who: The student must have a reasonable understanding of English fundamentals and the ability to at least speak English at the beginner level. Preferably the student will have already complete 1 or 2 courses in English and is now ready to move onto intermediate or more advanced speaking at normal speed on a wide variety of daily topics. Progress will be much faster for those can think a full sentence in English, without having to translating every word back to their language. In short, practicing with Spell.Com is likely to help novice and intermediate speakers improve the most in a short period of time.
Level of Difficulty: Our tutors are native American speakers and easily can adjust the level of difficulty to suit your desires. Just ask! We will be happy to adjust the speed, the amount of slang, the complexity of sentences and the topic complexity during your practice session. Regional Accents: We teach standard mainstream "Nightly TV news" American English that can well understood throughout the U.S. and other English speaking countries. We do not teach heavy regional accents, or Ebonics. Long or Short discussion: Constructing spoken English quickly requires a great deal of concentration, which can be tiring on students. Thus, our standard discussion is 45 minutes. However, some people prefer a longer discussion session after they get "warmed up," so our longer discussions are 1.5 hours. Two short discussions can be combined to form a long discussion and/or make-up discussion (for a missed discussion). Private or Semi-Private discussions: One-on-one practice time with a tutor will yield the fastest results. However, we understand that sometimes two people or more people are learning English at the same time. Discussions with two people who get along together well can be an effective way to reduce costs. If two children are learning English at the same time, we prefer a parent to be in the background.
When Will I Be Charged? You will be charged before the session begins. What If I Miss A Discussion? A tutor's time is valuable and the tutor may at their discretion charge a 20% fee or deduct 10 minutes. Rescheduled classes are between you and the tutor to find a mutually agreeable time. How Long Are Enrollments Good For: Unused Sessions expire after 1 year. What We Are Not: We offer an opportunity to practice natural conversational English with an American. We are not a substitute for a serious study into the grammar and syntax of English. We do not handle the book-learning aspects of grammar. We focus on the real human interaction that books and software courses either do not cover well or do not cover at all. For example, we role model a job interview with you, a very important skill to practice. But, we do not cover the rules of grammar, punctuation, writing, or reading comprehension.
