The Glossary

Here on the glossary page, you'll find definitions of key words from the store. The are in alphabetical order to make searching easier for you. You undersand some of the words we use from bleed to silkscreen printing. They'll come in handy when you want to quickly know the difference between different products and casing such as the duplicated Business Card CD, or the replicated DVD-R.

Adobe Illustrator - the industry-standard vector graphics format. AI and EPS are the original formats of Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator can open up PDF files, by the way.
Adobe Photoshop - a graphics editor created by Adobe Systems. It's the widely accepted standard for editing images..
Amaray Cases - a case that's used to carry DVD's. It is the primary case used to hold movies. Amaray Cases are 135mm x 190mm x 14mm. They have clear wraps around the outside to hold the entrapment and a booklet clip on the inside for the DVD.
Artwork Template - helps you get started on designing the artwork for your CD's or DVD's. The template allows you to make sure the dimensions of you artwork are correct.
Bleed - when a piece of artwork that extends past the necessary size. This is needed for the Business Card CD/DVD, and your artwork, because these are the only things that get cut down to a specific size. Bleed helps prevent a white border from forming because of a lack of artwork on the edge.
Business Card CD - a CD that is smaller and looks like a rectangular business card. This type is compact, but only holds 50MB. Only load this type of CD into a tray-loading device, such as those with two trays - an inner tray, for this kind of CD, and a bigger one, for regular CD's.
Business Card DVD - a DVD that is smaller and looks like a rectangular business card. This type is compact, but only holds 360MB. Only load this type of DVD into a tray-loading device, such as those with two trays - an inner tray, for this kind of DVD, and a bigger one, for regular DVD's.
Cardboard Sleeve - used as a mailer for CD and DVD packaging. Cardboard sleeves are often used instead of jewel cases because they don't break easily, and still look professional.
Clam Shell Case - translucent plastic cases for either CDs or DVDs. Its name comes from the fact it closes like a real clam does. The names C-Shell and D-Shell depend on the shape of the clam shell casing.
CYMK - the abbreviation for Cyan, Yellow, Magenta, and Black. CYMK is the standard color model used in color documents and offset printing. Since most colors are made up of CYMK, it's also considered to be four-color printing and most of the time, switching from RGB to CYMK is unnoticable..
Duplication - method of making discs for quantities under 500. This option is used if you want to avoid high quantities and cost associated with the higher quantity.
DVD-5 - is a single sided, single layer, 4.7GB DVD.
Entrapment - is the piece of paper used to cover the outside of the Amaray Case or the DVD case. This paper covers the front and the back on the outside of the casing.
Jewel Cases - the packaging of many CD's. Jewel cases are made out of plastic. The dimensions of a jewel case are: 142 mm × 125 mm × 10 mm. The compact disc, a front card, liner notes, and sometimes a back card, are in a jewel case at the store. Jewel cases can be quite brittle.
Lead Time - the period of time between the first phase to the last phase of manufacturing a certain product.
Offset Printing - a printing technique where the inked image is offset from a plate to a rubber blanket, that later goes to the printing surface. Offset printing is preferable for bitmap artwork like photos. Use this technique for more complex artwork.
Pantone Numbers - also known as Pantone Matching System numbers, are mapping numbers to colors so people from around the world can speak in color without any problems.
Replication - the industry standard for making large quantities. For quantities 500 and above, replication is used. Else, duplication is used.
Silkscreen Printing - also kown as serigraphy, is a printing technique that creates sharp-edged, single color images by a stencil and a porous fabric. This printing techinque is preferable for simple artwork.
Stamper - a is durable metal mold usually made for disc stamping or pressing. A Stamper is used in replication.
